Getting closer to discipline.  Now with 968 names affixed to the document, only 32 more signatures are needed to get the formal Letter of Complaint sent to the United Methodist Church (UMC) leadership in a move by concerned Methodists to discipline two of their more prominent members—George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. See my earlier blog on the United Methodists Calling for Accountable Leadership petition. You can also get further details about the project at TheyMustRepent.com. This is getting more and more interesting.

If you happen to know a member of the United Methodist Church, please do everyone a favor and direct their attention to the petition.

"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."[1]  A friend sent me this interesting recalculation and reassessment of real US defense spending:

"For fiscal year 2004, the US Department of Defense outlays were $436.4 billion, slightly less than a fifth of the total federal government outlays of $2,292.2 billion. Many Americans believe that 19 cents on defense for every 81 cents on non-defense is a reasonable way to spend a tax dollar. But by another calculation, an estimate much nearer the truth, the tax dollar splits 68 cents for defense and 32 cents on everything else."[2]

In other words, the US isn't spending one-fifth of the federal budget on defense—it's spending two-thirds! Did I hear someone say American values?
